The town was incorporated on February 13, 1891, and reportedly sits on the highest point of land between Montgomery and New Orleans. It was named after a fort that was built under the order of General Andrew Jackson. Fort Deposit provides its 1,200 residents with the annual arts and crafts fair called Calico Fort. Priester's Pecans, a worldwide purveyor of the southern delicacy, was established in Fort Deposit in 1935.
